Here and Elsewhere

An exhibition with C.J. Chueca, Justin Lim and Samuel Nnorom

For Untitled Houston 2026, Kates-Ferri Projects presents a three-artist booth titled “Here and Elsewhere” featuring artists C.J. Chueca (Peru), Samuel Nnorom (Nigeria) and Justin Lim (Malaysia).
Bringing together textile installation, painting, and ceramic sculpture, the exhibition explores the emotional and spatial dimensions of movement, how bodies, memories, and cultural forms travel, stretch, and transform across borders.

C.J. Chueca presents a series of ceramic airplane windows that frame the sky as both image and object. Rendered in glazed clay, these sculptural windows recall the familiar vantage point of air travel: a bounded aperture through which clouds, light, and atmosphere are observed from above. By translating this experience into ceramic form, Chueca captures the peculiar intimacy of looking outward while being in transit. The works evoke the quiet, reflective moments of flight—where time slows and landscapes dissolve into abstraction— inviting viewers to consider how perspective shapes our relationship to distance and place.

Samuel Nnorom’s sculptural works emerge from the long-standing textile culture of Nigeria, particularly the vibrant material language associated with Ankara fabrics. Through techniques of gathering, binding, and accumulation, the artist creates bulbous, suspended forms that feel simultaneously organic and architectural. His works expand outward like constellations or cellular structures, suggesting growth, migration, and the interdependence of individuals within broader social networks. The resulting installations create a sense of rhythmic motion in space, echoing the fluidity of cultural identity in a globalized world.

Justin Lim’s paintings transform domestic spaces into intimate psychological landscapes. Empty chairs, cushions, patterned objects, and soft pools of light form rooms that feel inhabited even in the absence of figures. His interiors, rendered with a lush yet restrained touch, bridge Southeast Asian material culture with the lineage of European still-life painting. Lim’s work reflects on solitude and introspection, treating memory and presence as intimately intertwined, and creating spaces that feel both intimate and expansive. Lim’s practice is rooted in an interest in how visual experience is filtered through emotion and recollection, producing images that feel suspended between stillness and drift.

Across the exhibition, Here and Elsewhere examines how three artists from different continents visualize the experience of moving through the world. Whether through the tactile expansion of fabric, the atmospheric layering of paint, or the framing device of a window, each artist proposes a different way of navigating the spaces between here and elsewhere. Together, their works create a visual dialogue about connection, perception, and the shifting boundaries of contemporary life.
